The Guidance Programme

RATIONALE
In our society values and morals have been seriously deteriorating. Many children are also having learning difficulties. Different strategies are in place to bring back values and to improve children’s learning, but our students are still confused by the many negative trends in our society and are seeking for answers. Preventive measures at the primary level will equip our students with necessary life skills. Guidance and counselling is an essential and integral part of the over-all educational process. Against this background, a comprehensive Guidance Programme is developed to cater for the total child.
Guidance Programme Goals
At grades one to six, the guidance programme will promote successful achievement by assisting
students in learning the skills and attitudes necessary to be successful in school. It will emphasize decision making, skill development, awareness, and beginning exploration of future educational and occupational possibilities. The programme will also stress self-concept and social skills development and the acquisition of skills in developing academic, career and interpersonal skills.

The programme will also provide support for parents regarding their children's personal, social and educational development. Teacher support is also important as professional development workshops will be planned for teachers. The Guidance Counsellors will also ensure that there is good rapport between them and members of staff so that teachers will understand their roles and so liaison in order to develop programme that best meet the needs of students.


Overall Goals:

  1. To facilitate the development of students’ self confidence and self concept through providing opportunities for students to discover and utilize their strengths, talents and abilities.

  3. To provide a comprehensive guidance curriculum and programme that caters to the academic, social and career development of each student.
  4. To provide encouragement and support for parents/guardians with regards to their children's educational, social and personal development.
  5. To inform and demonstrate to members of staff some workable strategies to eliminate or minimize behavioural problems they encounter or might encounter within their classroom.
  6. To provide a support system for members of staff so that they can perform their teaching task with greater efficiency.
  7. To ensure that all stakeholders recognize the importance of the guidance counsellors/guidance programme in enhancing the teaching/learning environment.
  8. To provide high quality intervention programmes to promote the success of the students and the school at large.
