RATIONALE
In our society values and morals have been seriously deteriorating. Many children are also having learning difficulties. Different strategies are in place to bring back values and to improve children’s learning, but our students are still confused by the many negative trends in our society and are seeking for answers. Preventive measures at the primary level will equip our students with necessary life skills. Guidance and counselling is an essential and integral part of the over-all educational process. Against this background, a comprehensive Guidance Programme is developed to cater for the total child.
Guidance Programme Goals
At grades one to six, the guidance programme will promote successful achievement by assisting
students in learning the skills and attitudes necessary to be successful in school. It will emphasize decision making, skill development, awareness, and beginning exploration of future educational and occupational possibilities. The programme will also stress self-concept and social skills development and the acquisition of skills in developing academic, career and interpersonal skills.
The programme will also provide support for parents regarding their children's personal, social and educational development. Teacher support is also important as professional development workshops will be planned for teachers. The Guidance Counsellors will also ensure that there is good rapport between them and members of staff so that teachers will understand their roles and so liaison in order to develop programme that best meet the needs of students.
